Farmhouse Table Makeover: Raw Silk and Wood

A dated pedestal table gets a cozy, cottage-style update.

Farmhouse Table Makeover: Raw Silk and Wood

There is something special about finding a forgotten piece of furniture tucked away in a thrift shop. This little round pedestal table was solid wood, but it was definitely showing its age with scratches and a worn finish. I saw past the dated look and envisioned it as the charming centerpiece for a cozy breakfast nook. By blending a crisp painted base with a freshly stained top, this table finally got the farmhouse transformation it deserved. Let me show you how it came together.

From Thrift Store Find to Cottage Centerpiece

I spotted this piece at a local thrift store. It was sturdy, but the finish was chipped, scratched, and just overall heavy looking for modern tastes. I knew the solid wood construction was fantastic, making it the perfect candidate for a makeover. The plan was to brighten the entire piece while adding warmth back into the top. The vision was pure farmhouse cottage: a creamy white base to lighten the room and a rich, natural wood stain on top to add that grounding, rustic feel. It is a classic look that never goes out of style.

My Go-To Toolkit for a Flawless Finish

For this project, I relied on a few key products. To ensure a durable finish on the base without heavy sanding, I used Raw Silk Fusion Mineral Paint, which is a beautiful, warm white. I also used a high-quality deglosser/prep cleaner to wipe down the entire piece first. For the tabletop, I used a fine-grit sanding block to strip it back to bare wood before applying a warm, walnut-toned stain and a matte protective topcoat.

Bringing the Farmhouse Vibe to Life: Step-by-Step

The first step is always prep. I gave the whole table a thorough cleaning with a prep cleaner to remove years of grime and wax. Once dry, I focused on the top. I used a sander with 120-grit paper, followed by 220-grit, to remove the old dark finish until I had raw, smooth wood. Next, I painted the pedestal base and apron with two coats of Raw Silk Fusion Mineral Paint, allowing adequate dry time between coats. The paint goes on smooth and has a built in topcoat. Finally, I applied the stain to the wood top, wiped off the excess, and sealed it with a matte finish for protection.

After

Just look at how this table turned out. The Raw Silk base is so bright and clean, while the newly revealed wood grain on the top adds that warm, rustic character. It is a night and day difference from the thrift store find it used to be. This project is a prime example of why solid wood furniture has great potential for a second life. Don't walk past those sturdy vintage pieces just because their finish is dated. With a little paint and vision, you can create something beautiful for your home.
